We started our family farm in Axtell, TX in 2014. We began with dorper sheep and a few years later added honey bees. Since 2014 we have continued to grow the business and are striving to constantly improve our genetics and provide quality products to our customers. To learn more about each side of the business continue reading below.
Honey bees: Tyler's Grandfather was a beekeeper and it was something he had always had an interest in. We began with just one colony of bees, but quickly expanded by splitting colonies and catching swarms. Our goal has been to produce bees that are both gentle and productive. In an effort to do this, we needed to saturate our area with favorable genetics. We established multiple out yards in every direction from our queen mating yard and filled them with gentle and productive colonies. These colonies produce hundreds of thousands of quality drones for our queens to mate with each year. We are currently bringing in new genetics to use as breeder queens and are focusing on bees that are tolerant of varroa. Every spring we split our colonies and produce nucs for sale. After splitting our colonies we focus on making a summer honey crop.
Dorper sheep: Our start in sheep goes back to 2004 in which we had a small herd of wool sheep. In 2014 we started over with a handful of dorper sheep. There was so much about the breed that was appealing and we quickly grew to appreciate them. Since 2014 we have consistently brought in quality rams and improved our genetics. We have kept replacements out of our own stock so we can carefully pick for traits that are favorable. Most of the ewes in our operation were born here and we have records showing their lineage. Having a semi closed flock, keeping good records and carefully selecting replacements has allowed us to raise top quality sheep. Our ewes thrive on a primarily pasture based system in which they only eat grass except for certain times of the year when they are raising lambs. During those times we supplement with a grain ration to make sure their nutritional needs are met. We select for prolific, hardy ewes that are parasite resistant. Through favorable genetics and good management practices we rarely have to de-worm our sheep. We offer both registered and commercial lambs for sale.
